There are several simple and easy steps to implement that can help improve your website’s search engine ranking with little effort.
Good SEO (search engine optimization) is probably more important than having the latest in design trends for your website. If you are generating no traffic coming to your fancy website then no one but you are going to see it.
With improved SEO you can at least drive more traffic to your site, which means you have at least a chance of making a sale or getting a contract etc.
To get started, here are some simple and easy-to-implement tips for improving your website SEO.
Use a domain name relevant to your area of business i.e. ‘frozen-yoghurt.co.uk’ rather than ‘freezer-stuff.co.uk’ if you have a business selling frozen yoghurt.
Use page names that are relevant to the subject area, i.e. ‘website design and development’ is a better page name than ‘websites’, it will give Google and the other search engines a clue to the page content.
Titles
Give each page a unique title
<title>Seven points to improve your page ranking</title>
and be sure to include your main keyword within the title.
Content
Your page content should be original and informative. Your main keyword should be within the first 200 words of your page content.
Links
Add good-quality links to your content, use text in the link and either in the href title or aria-label i.e.
<a href="about-us.html" aria-label="Learn more about us and the work we do for charities">Learn more about us</a>
rather than
<a href="about-us.html"></a>
Header Tags
Make good use of the header tags h1,h2,h3 etc. The h1 tag is the first and foremost header tag and should at the most basic level describe what the page content is all about.
The h1 should be from 20-70 characters long.
Header tags should also be used in sequence starting with the h1 tag.
Images
Add ‘alt’ descriptions to all images and use descriptive names for images i.e.
<img src="three black puppies.jpg" alt="three black puppies playing on a wool rug">
rather than
<img src="image-1.jpg">
Keywords
Just a note on keywords. You may be thinking what is a keyword? Keywords are the words and phrases that Internet users type into search engines, such as Google, to find websites that match what they are looking for.
Say a user enters ‘frozen yoghurt in Norfolk’ into a search engine, if your website sells or makes frozen yoghurt and is in Norfolk you would benefit from having ‘frozen yoghurt’ and ‘Norfolk’ as your keywords.
Conclusion
Obviously, there is far more to SEO than just this brief post but these seven points will help improve and enhance your websites page ranking with little effort and they should really be standard practice when developing a website.
