There is never a bad time to carry out some housekeeping tasks if you own a website, but with the start of a new year, it's the ideal time to ensure your website is working at it's best.
Here are some simple things to do to ensure your website is working at it's optimum:-
- Make sure your website is secure and is using the https protocol and not the HTTP protocol, Google's search ranking will penalise you for not using the https protocol, and most hosting companies now offer Let's Encrypt as part of their service, which makes it super easy to implement.
- Ensure you have good original content and lots of it. Also, make sure that all content is still relevant, you may find that some content you added a year or two ago is no longer accurate or relevant.
- Carry out an SEO Audit, it’s important to have the relevant keywords, titles and descriptions for metadata, along with a good amount of back-links and 'alt' descriptions for all images, check that all are in place and correct. Changes in 2018 now mean you can use up to 320 characters in a meta description. - Employ the latest technologies and methods if they offer a benefit for either yourself as the website owner or for any user of your website. By this I mean employing third party software or processes such as Cloudinary for image or video processing, this will mean faster page loading times, a benefit to both yourself as the website owner with more users staying with your website and for the user as they have a better experience.
- Use services such as Googles Pagespeed Checker, Googles Mobile Speed Checker and Nibbler to check out your website for speed, responsiveness and other issues. Optimise your website to remove any issues or poorly rated areas.
- Make sure you are doing all you can reduce minimise server load, is your website using Gzip, minification for js, CSS and HTML and image optimisation.
These few simple steps can mean the difference between a user staying on your website or moving on to the next.
